Thekkady is home to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve, about 160 km from Kaduthuruthy, Kerala, South India. Forest, a lake formed by the Mullaperiyar dam, and a chance to see elephants, deer, bison and many birds make it a well-known nature trip from the homestay.
Most guests take a boat on Periyar Lake, watching the shoreline for animals coming to drink, then walk or trek a short forest path with a local guide. Sightings are never guaranteed — that is part of a real sanctuary — but the lake, the trees and the quiet of the reserve are worth the day on their own. Spice plantations around Thekkady (pepper, cardamom, vanilla) are an easy extra stop if you have time after the boat.
Like Munnar, this is a longer drive. An early start works best, both for the road and for the first boats on the lake. Wear comfortable shoes and something with sleeves for the forest. We can help with timing, a packed plan, and transport on request (charged separately). If you would rather not rush, an overnight in Thekkady is possible; we can outline both options.
